Honestly, I start to yawn when someone under 30 complains about under-eye bags, dark circles, or discolorations. Wait till you hit 30 when things get worse! The struggle is real for women in their 30s. Our default look is hungover! Luckily, there are some amazing concealers you can use in your 30s to enjoy coverage in the most natural-looking way.
And before you skip and scroll down to the concealer with the highest coverage, let me just tell you that more coverage doesn’t translate to better makeup. We want a full-coverage, nay, uber-coverage concealer to quickly blend our way into a fresh, youthful-looking set of under-eyes. But it doesn’t work that way.
A good concealer for 30-something skin should subtly cover imperfections but it should also be long-lasting, non-creasing, and blendable. If it looks good for an hour and then starts to crease or separate, the coverage won’t mean much now, will it? So hold on to your preconceptions and keep reading for the best concealers for your 30s.
Best Concealers For Your 30s
1. Tarte Shape Tape Contour Concealer
Containing some of the most crucial antioxidants you want to have in your products in your 30s, this one is your go-to concealer to cover up anything that needs to be covered on your face. If you prefer wearing makeup all day every day, then it’s wise to have nourishing ingredients in your concealer.
Enriched with several seed oils, the concealer glides on the skin and blurs out all those annoying concerns you deal with in your 30s. Flakiness, tiny bumps, dark circles, tiredness, bags, redness from allergies, and of course, fine lines! It instantly lifts up the upper part of your face. For the lower part, make sure to check out these foundations for your 30s.
Quick Tip: Recently, I’ve been using the other version of this concealer. It’s Tarte Shape Tape Radiant Concealer but it’s medium coverage. So if you don’t have major under-eye concerns you’re trying to cover up and you could use the bright finish, you’re going to love it.
Available Shades: 35
Size: 0.33 oz
Other Features: Waterproof, vegan
2. Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer
This highly concentrated concealer’s creamy texture is like a foundation for your under-eyes. A tiny amount gets the job done and covers every single imperfection on the way, including dark circles, hyperpigmentation, and even puffiness! It wakes up your eyes with its fabulous finish and is one of the best dewy finish concealers for your 30s.
Whether you prefer a natural look or a full-coverage one, this concealer can work either way if you apply it accordingly. It also works great on the rest of the face and I love using this one to do makeup without foundation. Creasing mostly depends on your eye shape and application, but I can confidently say that this is one of the few that doesn’t crease under my eyes.
Available Shades: 30
Size: 0.22 oz
Other Features: Fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, suitable for sensitive skin
3. Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer
I’ve been a fan of this drugstore concealer since day 1. The light, wet consistency gives you time to spread the concealer evenly before settling in and drying. The applicator is also convenient to prevent overuse. Dab away dark circles and fine lines gently with the sponge tip under your eyes.
Blend it for a luminous finish to wake up tired eyes for a refreshed and youthful look. The creamy, blendable consistency makes it easy to use the concealer in different ways besides covering blemishes on the face. You can use it as an eyeshadow primer or a highlighting concealer to carve out your brows too.
Finish: Natural satin
Available Shades: 18
Size: 0.2 oz
Other Features: Oil-free, fragrance-free
4. Lancome Teint Idole Ultra Wear All Over Concealer
After falling in love with the Teint Idole Foundation, I’m now obsessed with their concealer. This is a high-coverage liquid concealer with a very light texture. At the same time, it feels super rich so you only need a tiny amount to draw yourself a new set of under-eyes.
It has a matte, natural-looking finish. It smooths out the under eyes and neutralizes dark circles. I use it to cover up the redness around my nose too. I also use this all over my face when I don’t feel like wearing foundation and it even blurs out my pores. It applies smoothly and doesn’t look flaky or streaky.
Available Shades: 20
Size: 0.43 oz
Other Features: Non-comedogenic, suitable for sensitive skin
5. Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat High Cover Radiant Concealer
If you don’t need too much coverage and prefer a concealer that looks like skin, this is the one. This is an under-eye brightener and it’s less about coverage but more about waking up tired-looking eyes. It’s also perfect for summertime when you don’t want to wear anything too heavy.
The concealer works like a treatment for dark circles and puffiness thanks to the caffeine in it. It’s also rich in antioxidants to protect the delicate eye area from free radical damage. Additionally, the brush tip makes it easy to apply tiny dots into the inner corner of the eye which is usually tricky. It has an illuminating effect that leaves the under-eye area bright.
Available Shades: 12
Size: 0.08 oz
6. Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Flawless Wear Concealer
For long-lasting and full-coverage makeup, this one is as good as the Double Wear foundation. It’ll do what it says and stay in place for several hours without creasing, which makes it a super helpful concealer for your 30s.
The creamy texture is super concentrated, so don’t go drawing a triangle under your eyes! It has a matte finish that’ll completely refine your look, cover up imperfections, and smooth out fine lines. It doesn’t need any baking but feel free to do so for an even longer wear.
Available Shades: 21
Size: 0.24 oz
Other Features: Oil-free, waterproof, fragrance-free, suitable for sensitive skin
7. Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Self-Setting Concealer
This is a lightweight creamy concealer that has buildable coverage with a soft matte finish. You can use it under your eyes as well as on problematic spots.
If you use a setting powder for your concealer, this will save you time and money as it doesn’t need setting. The concealer melts into the skin, blends out easily, and covers up bags, redness, and dark shadows perfectly.
Available Shades: 25
Size: 0.17 oz
8. M.A.C. Pro Longwear Concealer
I know, MAC is so Y2K but honestly, this is one of the highest coverage concealers I’ve ever used. Ever! It’s so rich in texture and so creamy in consistency that it so satisfyingly smoothes out everything under the eyes. And you only need one dot of it.
Compared to others, you get more product with this, and considering how rich the consistency is, this can last you a long time before you need a refill. Whether you’re trying to cover up fine lines or dark circles under the eyes or you’re trying to neutralize redness on your face, this is an amazing concealer that lasts all day without fading or smudging!
Quick Tip: Pot concealers are being replaced by liquid concealers but they work better when you’re trying to spot conceal imperfections on the face. I can swear by MAC Studio Finish SPF 35 Concealer because the consistency instantly melts with heat and allows you to blend it into the skin using your fingers.
Available Shades: 16
Size: 0.30 oz
Other Features: Fragrance-free, non-comedogenic
So these are some of the best concealers you can use in your 30s for fresh, youthful eyes. If you prefer a matte/natural finish and high-coverage concealer, you can’t go wrong with Lancome Teint Idole Ultra Wear All Over Concealer. It works both on the face and under the eyes, covers up pretty much anything from dark circles to wrinkles, and works for all skin types. Plus, you get more ounces so it’s cost-effective too. On the flip side, if you have dry skin or you prefer something with a radiant finish, definitely try Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer. It’s equally high coverage but it has this nice, highlighting effect on the under-eye area, which makes you look rested. It’s also suitable for all skin types and lasts long without smudging.
If you haven’t found what you’re looking for here, here’s how to choose a concealer for 30-something skin.
What to Look For in Concealers To Use in Your 30s
Shade is one of the most important things to keep in mind when choosing a concealer. Your under-eye concealer should be about 2 shades lighter than your skin tone. Because we want the under-eye area to look brighter than the rest of the face. At the same time, if the shade is too light, it’ll look unnatural. So make sure you try out the shade and see for yourself whether you shop online or in-store. When in doubt, use a tried and true concealer shade as your starting point and try to match the new concealer shade with that one. If you want to use your concealer on your face too, make sure you don’t go too light and only go for 1 shade lighter than your skin tone.
As we’ve established, full coverage doesn’t always mean better coverage but it’s a good starting point. If you have prominent dark circles, hyperpigmentation, and fine lines, you need a high-coverage concealer. But know that high-coverage concealers can be heavy and tricky to apply. In that case, consider a medium-coverage concealer that’s buildable. It means that you can layer the concealer and build up the coverage depending on your preference.
As a makeup product, concealers can be oil-based, water-based, light, heavy, oil-free, and so much more. So you need to consider the formulation to make sure it suits your skin type. Otherwise, your concealer can irritate your skin and even cause breakouts if you’re using it on your face. So if you’re prone to acne, go for non-comedogenic and non-acnegenic concealers. If you have sensitive skin, go for fragrance-free concealers that are suitable for sensitive skin. If you have dry skin, go for creamy, moisturizing concealers to avoid flaky under eyes.
How To Apply Concealer in Your 30s
We don’t have what they call ‘mature’ skin yet. At the same time, wrinkles and fine lines are pretty noticeable in our 30s. So the way you apply your concealer is also about minimizing the appearance of wrinkles. Here’s how you can do it.
Step 1: Apply Eye Cream
Start with a clean canvas. Make sure you’ve washed your face properly and there’s no makeup residue from the day before. Finish your skincare routine and prep your under-eyes with a nice, hydrating eye cream. Eye creams are not just for youthful-looking eyes. They also plump the eye area, make your concealer apply smoothly, and prevent it from creasing later on. If you’re on the lookout for one, see our round-up of the best eye creams for your 30s.
Step 2: Apply Concealer
Put two dots of concealer under your eyes. Use your ring finger to blend your concealer outward toward the temples. The heat from your finger helps the concealer blend seamlessly into the skin, making it glide easily. Alternatively, use a sponge or a brush to apply your concealer.
Step 3: Layer Carefully
Avoid multiple coats of concealer, especially if it’s a high-coverage concealer. It can look heavy, and cakey later on. If the coverage of the first layer isn’t enough, carefully layer the second coat. Put a very small amount of concealer, and blend it gently. If your eyelids tend to droop, it can make you look tired or older. In that case, apply a tiny amount of the concealer on the outer corner as close to the eyes as possible for a lifted appearance.
Step 4: Set Your Concealer
Most people don’t need to set their concealer for everyday use. But if you need to look even smoother and want something longer-wear, consider setting your concealer. Dip your brush into a loose setting powder and pat the powder into the skin around the eyes. This gives you an instantly smooth, matte, airbrushed finish. Avoid using too much.
