When your complexion has taken on a lackluster tone, bronzers come to the rescue for a touch of warmth and radiance. Well, I tend to overdo the whole sun-kissed look and I usually end up with a sun-licked face, which is not always pretty when shimmer is involved. But that’s where matte bronzers come in!

Matte finish bronzers offer a natural, sunlit radiance without the sparkle, which is as versatile as things get when bronzing is involved. Because of that flexibility, matte bronzers help you achieve a sun-kissed glow as well as a sculpted jawline.

If you’re new to bronzers, know that there is a gazillion options to choose from. And bronzers are not cheap. And I know we don’t like surprises when it comes to makeup products that require a shade match!

Well, I’m here to help you get things started, so no worries. Below are the best matte bronzers along with a few shade recommendations.

Best Matte Bronzers

1. Benefit Hoola Bronzer

Benefit Hoola Bronzer - Best Matte Bronzer

This is an absolute hit no matter your skin type or tone. This is the bronzer that should pop into your head when you hear matte bronzer. It’s satisfyingly pigmented and the shades are on the cooler side, as opposed to warm, which makes it easy to use the bronzer to lightly sculpt the face too. To this day, I love the little brush that comes with the bronzer because it helps you know where to place the bronzer if you want a more defined look. I use it with a skin tint and with a full-coverage foundation. I use it in winter when I’m pale and in summer when I’m all tan. It’s that good and you can’t go wrong with it.

Size: 0.28 oz/8 gr

2. Fenty Sun Stalk’r Instant Warmth Bronzer

Fenty Sun Stalk'r Instant Warmth Bronzer

I’ve used both this powder bronzer and cream bronzer from Fenty. And while I think the cream formula is much, much more pigmented, I think this powder bronzer is more beginner-friendly. Hear me out. It’s not very pigmented but it’s very buildable. This makes it easier to warm up your skin without making your face look contoured, sculpted, or overly done. To give you an idea, I need 3 applications to define my cheeks with this bronzer but the color looks very subtle and natural. So if you’re a beginner or if you have fair skin tone, this buildable matte bronzer is for you.

3. Dior Forever Natural Powder Bronzer

Dior Forever Natural Powder Bronzer

This is one of the few high-end items I absolutely love. This is incredibly pigmented and the colors are so classy that you can go from 0 to 100 with 1 swipe! Even though the shade range is not very wide, you are very likely to find a match for your skin tone because the colors are so versatile. When you work the bronzer into the skin, it doesn’t just disappear into thin air or spread out to oblivion. The intensity stays there as you blend it into the skin, allowing for an even application. My shade for my medium skin with a tan at the moment is 7 Golden Bronze. And it’s this beautiful brown with almost red undertones that pop!

4. Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess Powder Bronzer

Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess Powder Bronzer

As a 30-something, Estee Lauder is very close to my heart because they never disappoint. Though the shade range is narrow with this one, this matte powder bronzer is just as good as Dior’s formula. I have a medium skin tone and I love the shade ‘Deep’ because it helps me sculpt my cheeks and jawline too. There’s no patchiness and it’s very easy to blend and apply.

Shades: 4
Size: 0.74 oz
Good To Know: Non-comedogenic

5. Anastasia Beverly Hills Cream Bronzer

Anastasia Beverly Hills Cream Bronzer - Best Cream Matte Bronzer

I love a cream bronzer as much as the next guy. The trick is to find the right formula because some cream bronzers are very creamy whereas others feel cushiony. So you can’t really think of anything when you think of cream bronzer. Well, this matte finish cream bronzer feels like a concealer in a pot. The consistency is that creamy! It’s intense, and it’s pigmented but once you find the right shade, you can create amazing looks with this one. It goes both as a cream bronzer and a cream contour. The texture spreads out very nicely without fading and this whole pot will last you forever!

6. Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer

Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer - Best Matte Bronzer Powder

While this compact powder bronzer comes in 3 shades, I honestly think that the light shade is trash. I don’t know what skin tone would benefit from that lifeless, yellowish color but Medium, if I may say, is a beautiful brown with neutral undertones and a high color payoff. The long-lasting formula takes a few swipes to bring summer to your cheeks.

Shades: 3
Size: 0.28 oz/8 gr
Good To Know: Cruelty-free

7. L’Oreal Paris Infallible Up to 24H Fresh Wear Soft Matte Bronzer

L'Oreal Paris Infallible Up to 24H Fresh Wear Soft Matte Bronzer - Best Drugstore Matte Bronzer

And lastly, there’s this affordable, budget-friendly matte bronzer with a good shade range to suit any skin tone. It allows for a very smooth, seamless, and non-patchy application that ends up giving you a natural look. It’s not very pigmented so it requires a couple of applications when you’re trying to define or sculpt the face. But when it comes to warming up your complexion, this is a true bronzer so it’ll give you sun-kissed cheeks with soft impact colors with blurred-out edges.

Shades: 8
Size: 0.31 oz/9 gr
Good To Know: Waterproof, non-comedogenic

So these are the best matte bronzers out there. I think Benefit Hoola Bronzer still reigns supreme. Whether you have dry skin or oily skin, mature skin or acne-prone skin, normal skin, or sensitive skin, the bronzer works! The shades are incredibly flattering chocolates and browns that jazz up any complexion. If you’re ready to get started, here’s how to apply bronzer for the ultimate sun-kissed look.

What To Look For in a Matte Bronzer

The Right Shade

The most important thing to keep in mind when choosing a bronzer is the shade. And you choose the shade depending on your skin tone and you go 2-3 shades darker than your skin tone. If you have fair skin, for example, you should be hovering somewhere over medium. Additionally, consider your undertone and choose warm shades if you have a warm undertone and choose cool shades if you have a cool undertone.

In general, bronzers tend to have warm shades whereas contour products are usually cool, which helps create the shadows and depth needed to contour the face. If you want your bronzer to be versatile and you want it to work both ways, keep that in mind and go for cool or neutral-toned bronzers.

Matte bronzers come in powder, stick, and cream. Powder bronzers are usually more versatile and can be used with anything. Cream bronzes require a bit of getting used to but they are amazing for creating multi-dimensional looks. Stick bronzers are easy to use and more convenient. As you can infer, compact powder bronzers are usually more handy.
