I don’t wear a lot of makeup in summer, and most of the time, I simply use an eye makeup remover and wash my face afterward. But come winter, I layer makeup like there’s no tomorrow. And that calls for something that’s a bit more thorough. That’s why I prefer double cleansing with a makeup-removing balm in colder months. One particular product that I always bring up whenever I talk about double cleansing is Clinique Take The Day Off Makeup Removing Balm.

I decided to do a complete review of it to demonstrate that it truly deserves all the hype! So dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to see how well this cleansing balm removes my full face of makeup. But if you’ve never used a makeup-removing product before and don’t know why one might need one, here’s the gist.

Double cleansing is a two-step face-cleansing method. You first use a makeup remover like a cleansing balm/oil, or a micellar water. This step breaks down your makeup, making it easier to wash away. In step two, you wash your face with your regular cleanser.

Most daily gel or foam cleansers fail at thoroughly getting rid of my heavy, waterproof makeup. By removing makeup first, I get cleaner-looking skin. This prevents makeup residue from lingering on my skin, which can clog pores and lead to breakouts.

So it’s no wonder why dermatologists always warn us against going to sleep with makeup on. But once you find a formula you’ll like, trust me, you’re going to want to remove your makeup. So keep reading for my honest review of Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm.

Texture

Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm utilizes safflower seed oil as an emollient in its formula. Cleansing balms melt with the heat of your fingers as you rub them into the skin. They turn to an oil-like substance and become very runny.

And that’s what gives you that greasy-looking shine when you look in the mirror while you’re removing makeup. But that does not happen with this cleansing balm, which is why I love it.

It melts into this incredibly lightweight oil as opposed to a super sloppy, dripping-from-your-elbows kind of thing. I don’t feel like I’m slathering on a jar of olive oil.

The texture is the reason why my makeup removal doesn’t become this messy ritual that requires a shower afterward.

The Packaging

Clinique Cleansing Balm comes in various sizes. While you can try the small size to test out the waters and see for yourself, I prefer the jumbo size and I recommend that one because it’s a makeup-removing balm. We’ll always need it!

The balm comes in this purple jar with a silver lid. It feels a bit heavier and firmer than plastic but it definitely is not glass! Still, it’s aesthetically pleasing. Now, here’s the only negative thing I can say about it: the balm does not come with a scoop!

I mean, I have this huge, fancy jar with expensive-looking colors and I go into my bathroom with my silk robe and I’m supposed to dip into the solid wax thing with my sausage fingers! It kind of ruins the experience a bit!

Results

After about 20 seconds of working the balm into my skin, I can see the balm picking up the color of my makeup and turning brown and black.

As I massage it onto my eyelids, I can see my mascara and eyeliner dissolving and breaking down. After rinsing it away, I see zero residue on my skin.

And my skin is soft to the touch, but it doesn’t feel as if it’s been dipped in vegetable oil. All my makeup, including my foundation, and waterproof mascara is gone!

The Verdict

Clinique Take The Day Off Makeup Removing Balm remains a double cleansing staple for me. It removes makeup thoroughly, including stubborn eye makeup and waterproof base makeup. It’s suitable for all skin types. It feels comfortable on the skin and does not leave any residue afterward. I can experiment with whatever type of makeup I like and enjoy clean, spotless skin after I remove it in the evening. No mess, no sloppy elbows -it’s the reason why I never forget to remove makeup before bed.

Who Should Use It

Anyone who wears makeup needs a makeup remover. Even if you don’t, most sunscreens, because of how much we apply and because of their heavy consistency, are difficult to completely remove with a basic cleanser.

So whether you have dry, normal, oily, or sensitive skin, you can use Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm to dissolve makeup and remove sunscreen.

Also, if you don’t like micellar waters or you find cleansing oils uncomfortable to use, you can replace them with this cleansing balm.

How To Use It

Again, the balm doesn’t come with a scoop. So either use a scoop if you have one or use your fingers to scoop out a little chunk of the balm to use on dry skin. This will take about 60 seconds!

Put some of that balm on your right cheek and some on your left cheek and start massaging your face using your two hands.

Work the balm down toward the jawline and upward to the forehead. Lastly, close your eyes and gently massage the eyelids to dissolve the mascara.

You can open your eyes to see how you’re doing but expect them to be a bit blurry because balms get into the eyes when you’re using them to remove eye makeup.

Don’t forget to wipe the area on the lower lash line. That’s usually where you’re eyeliner and mascara smudges. Allow the balm to pick up the residue in that area as well.

Once you’ve done with the balm, either rinse it off with lukewarm water or wipe it away with a cloth. Move on to the second step of your double cleansing, which is using your regular face wash.
