Concealer vs. Foundation: What’s the Difference?
Different tools, different jobs.
Both foundation and concealer are two of the most essential products in any makeup bag. Both are complexion products and both can make and break your makeup look.
But when you start to look into minimalist makeup, or you’re completely new to makeup, you might find yourself wondering how exactly they’re different from each other and if both of these products are necessary.
Well, they do seem similar, but they serve distinct purposes. Keep reading to learn the differences between concealer and foundation, and when and how to use each.
What is Foundation?
A makeup foundation is a base product that creates an even skin tone and texture, providing a neutral base to layer makeup. It comes in various forms such as liquid, cream, and powder.
Moreover, there are different types of foundation coverage, allowing you to get your desired level of camouflage. It can be full coverage if you’re going for a full-glam look or sheer coverage if you’re going for more of an everyday, natural makeup look.

What is Concealer?
Concealer is an equally versatile and helpful product that is used to conceal specific imperfections. It can be used under the eyes to cover dark circles or fine lines and it can also be used on the face to cover dark spots or acne.
Though it can come in powder and cream form, concealer is most common in liquid form and comes in a tube with a doe foot applicator. Just like a foundation, it comes in low, medium, and high coverage. If you want to dive deeper into everything concealer, from types to finishes, check out my complete guide.
What is the Difference Between Foundation and Concealer?
While both concealer and foundation are used to enhance complexion makeup and provide coverage, there are differences between the two.
First of all, foundation is usually lighter and has a runny texture whereas concealer is creamier and thicker. Secondly, foundation comes in different finishes including radiant and dewy whereas concealer mostly comes in natural finish or matte.
Thirdly, foundation is used alone to create an even base all over the face and can’t be used topically. Concealer, on the other hand, is more targeted and can be used on certain areas of the face for focused coverage.
And lastly, foundation needs to match your overall skin tone while concealer usually needs to be 1-2 shades lighter than your skin tone, especially when used for the under-eye area.
Is Concealer Supposed to Be Lighter Than Foundation?
If you’re using an under-eye concealer, it’s better to have it 1-2 shades lighter than your skin tone and your foundation. But if you’re using the concealer to cover blemishes on the face, it’s better if your concealer shade matches your skin tone and foundation.
Most people won’t use a separate concealer for each area. So choosing a concealer shade that closely resembles your skin tone and is maybe 1 shade lighter will work both for the eye area and on the face.
For example, the Tarte Shape Tape Concealer in shade 22N is something I can use all over my face, including my under-eyes, comfortably for my medium skin tone.
Do You Need Both Concealer and Foundation?
No, you don’t have to use both concealer and foundation. However, you might want to use both of them if you’re going for a certain look. Because sometimes, using only one of the products won’t be enough to achieve your desired look.
For example, when you want to create a makeup look for a special occasion and you want something high coverage and long-lasting, you need both concealer and foundation. Your foundation will even everything out on the face such as cheeks and forehead and concealer will brighten your eyes.
When you don’t use concealer, you might end up using your foundation on the under-eye area, which might give you the appearance of tired eyes or dark under-eyes.
On the flip side, you can skip concealer if you’re using a light coverage foundation that looks very natural no matter where you apply it on the face.
Can You Use Concealer without Foundation?
Yes, you can use concealer without using foundation. Concealer is more targeted and allows for a targeted application. You can use it on the under eyes and you can use it to spot conceal imperfections on the face. Then you apply your blush or bronzer and finish your makeup without needing foundation.
Where Do You Put Concealer and Foundation?
You apply concealer below the eyes and cover that hollow area right under the eyes. You need to apply it covering the inner corners of the eyes as well as the outer corners to create a cohesive look. If you need targeted coverage on the face, apply the concealer in dots only where you want to cover up.
And you put foundation all over the face, covering the cheeks, the chin, and the forehead. On a side note, I prefer applying foundation only on the center of my face and a little bit on my chin. Try this if you don’t need a lot of coverage on the forehead.
Which One Goes First?
When applying makeup, it’s all up to you to decide which one to apply first; concealer or foundation. Personally, I apply my foundation first and don’t bring it too close to my under-eye area.
Then I apply my concealer and blend it well so that it looks seamless. I also sometimes use concealer around my nose or chin to highlight those areas. Applying foundation first allows me to do this.
On the other hand, some people use concealer first. This method is better if you’re going to use your concealer on the face too. You apply a dab of concealer on problem areas like acne or dark spots, Then you apply it on the under eyes. Then you go over the center of the face with your foundation. Again, it’s all up to you.
Concealer and foundation have a great impact on your overall makeup look. So understanding how they work will help you wear makeup that better suits you and makes you feel comfortable when wearing it.
Whether you want to use them both or just one, invest in a good formula, try the shades in-store, and experiment with different brands to find your ideal match.
